History
INTENT
Our history curriculum is ambitious for all learners and enables all children to be confident and eloquent learners. The aims of the history curriculum are for children to develop an interest and love for the subject, to understand what has gone before and why the world is like it is. A focus on skills and knowledge allows a spiral curriculum that builds year on year, ensuring our year 6 children leave with a broad knowledge and a range of skills to enable them to be successful learners in the future. The History curriculum has been designed to fully cover the areas set out in the National Curriculum, further details of which can be found in the long-term overview. We aim to ensure our children are the centre of the curriculum, ensuring learning is relevant and a starting point which broadens to encompass the community, wider world and a range of experiences. Underpinned by the National Curriculum, Development Matters and our school principals, the curriculum ensure the children are well prepared to make a positive contribution to life in modern Britain.
IMPLEMENTATION
The History curriculum provides the focus of many of the ‘topics’ studied across Key Stages One and Two. Learning is mapped to the National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. The learning journey is mapped out in a two-year rolling programme. The themes are identified and units planned so that identified key concepts can be taught. Children acquire knowledge and develop skills to achieve deep understanding of the subject.
IMPACT
The outcome of our history education is for pupils to use skills learnt to think critically, develop perspective and judgement (use NC purpose of study) in order to influence the decisions they make in their own lives in the future. The large majority of pupils will have achieved age related expectations in history.
We make links with other areas, such as Geography, Science and Maths, and teach in a cross curricular way, where it will help children to understand how their Historical learning fits into a bigger picture.
